The object of this paper is represented by urban safety policies in Rome’s suburbs. Urban safety is analyzed through a sociological perspective. The feeling of insecurity is associated to the debate on the risk society. The paper looks at the patterns of change in urban contexts, with a particular emphasis on the migration trends. Local policies of urban safety are analyzed within the traditional frame-work of the sociology of deviance. Case studies have been selected within the boundaries of the city of Rome and are represented by two specific suburban districts. These were chosen with regards to the urban safety related problems that they present. The assessment of the social prevention policies considered shows that there is a lack of integration among street level bureaucrats and the impor-tance of the role played by the participation of local citizenship.
