Most of the contributions to the present volume were originally given as papers at the Conference “Letter(s): Functions and Forms of Letter-Writing in Victorian Art and Literature” which was held at “Gabriele d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara in November 2000. A recurrent question raised at the Conference was that of the complex history of Victorian letter-writing, which emerged in the variety of the papers’ themes and approaches, as well as of related issues posed by the audience. The main scope of this volume, which includes enlarged versions of the conference papers together with new contributions, is that of offering proof of this variety and suggesting new hermeneutic pathways to explore.
