The so called Brussels Ia Regulation (BRIa) is an EU law instrument aimed at uniformly distributing jurisdiction and governing recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters among EU Member States. Nonetheless, specific provisions on jurisdiction and recognition of judgments are laid down also by international conventions dealing with particular matters such as transports. The question of the interplay between these two sets of provisions is not exhaustively addressed by Article 71 of Brussels Ia. The Handbook deals with this question and the connected issues relating to the coordination between Brussels Ia and the Transport conventions. The present volume represents the outcome of the research conducted in the context of the project Brussels Ia and transport (BRIaTra) JUST/2014/JCOO/AG/CIVI — Application 7706, co–financed by the European Union and carried out by the University of Genoa, the University of Valencia, IPR Verlag Gmbh and Riga Graduate School of Law.
