The legislative provision that gives officially rise to social housing initiatives in Sicily contains, since Article 1, a mistake made by the Regional Government in the field of urban planning: preferential areas are not specified. These areas are the most suitable for social housing interventions, being the aim the requalification of the most damaged areas, that is to say historic centres and suburbs. One of the less considered subjects in the political agenda, at least in the last 30 years in Sicily, has been and still is the lack of a complete and updated urban reform, more and more essential for the improvement of the housing space of our cities. Luckily, things are starting to change. Nonetheless, while carrying out social housing initiatives, we make believe that something about that city outdated culture has been fulfilled. A culture that used to be a utopia and that now seems to become reality, but still reflecting that planning balance – urban or architectural, it hardly matters – we strongly need.
