The credit–based structure and organisation of the academic courses has noticeably reduced the time elapsed for each topic and the related applications in the frame of the teaching modules. To this respect, students needs support by means of tools that drive and explain effectively the application of the theoretical topics. This book has been conceived to be such a tool. It is organised in ten Chapters that cover theorethical, design and implementation topics. The chapters are integrated with four appendices where insights, software and application aspects are covered.

Marina Ruggieri is Full Professor in Telecommunications at the University of Roma “Tor Vergata” (RTV), teaching DSP and Information and Coding. She is member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE AES Society. She is the Director of a M.Sc on Advanced Satellite Communications and Navigations Systems at RTV. She teaches Satellite Systems and Applications at the International Teledoc program for Ph.D students on the CNIT terretrial-satellite integrated network. Her research mainly concerns space communications and navigation systems (in particular satellites) as well as mobile and multimedia networks. She is the Principal Investigator of various projects in the satellite and integrated systems area and co-ordinator of the RTV Unit in various European Projects. She is Editor of the IEEE Transactions on AES for Space Systems, Chair of the IEEE AES Space Systems Panel, member of the Editorial Board of Wireless Personal Communications — an International Journal (Kluwer). She was awarded the 1990 Piero Fanti International Prize and she had a nomination for the Harry M. Mimmo Award in 1996 and the Cristoforo Colombo Award in 2002. She is author of about 180 papers, on international journals/transactions and proceedings of international conferences, book chapters and books.

Michele Luglio received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering at University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. He received the Ph.D. degree in telecommunications in 1994. From August to December 1992 he worked, as visiting Staff Engineering at Microwave Technology and Systems Division of Comsat Laboratories (Clarksburg, Maryland, USA). From 1995 to 2004 he was research and teaching assistant at RTV. In 2001 and 2002 he was visiting Professor at the Computer Science department of University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) to teach Satellite Networks class. Currently he is Associate Professor at RTV. He works on designing satellite systems for multimedia services both mobile and fixed, in the frame of projects funded by EC, ESA and ASI. Now he teaches Satellite Telecommunications and Signals & Transmission.

Marco Pratesi teaches for the courses of Radiocommunications Systems and Telecommunications Systems at the University of L’Aquila and of Digital Signal Processing at the University of Roma “Tor Vergata”. His research activity mainly concerns terrestrial and satellite mobile telecommunications systems. He has been the Project Scientist of the DAVID project (DAta and Video Interactive Distribution) and is Co–Investigator of the WAVE project (W–band Analysis and VErification) of ASI (Italian Space Agency).
