Divided into four parts, the first of which gives an account of the wide landscape of Anglophone African literature, it deals with some of the main issues of the Nigerian literary world through studies carried out by eminent Italian and foreign scholars on some of Nigeria’s most distinguished writers: from the “pillars” of contemporary Nigerian fiction, drama and poetry — Achebe, Clark–Bekederemo, Okara, Rotimi, Soyinka and Tutuola; to those who lost their lives for their country at different moments and fighting different wars — Okigbo and Saro–Wiwa; to those belonging to the generation of young artists — Okri and Sowande; and to the symbols of womanhood in a society that forever emphasizes sexual asymmetry — Buchi Emecheta and Chinyere Grace Okafor. Part Four offers a chronology of Nigeria’s main socio-political and historical events — first as a mosaic of different tribes, then as a colony within the British Empire, finally as an independent State.

Francesca Rosati is Associate Professor of English at the Faculty of Political Science, University of Teramo. She has published various papers on African and Canadian literatures in English and Linguistics, in particular on English for Special Purposes.
