Zacher. The special Bimester on the Theory of Groups in honour of Reinhold Baer (1902-1979) was held at the “Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II”, and took place during May and June 2002. The purpose of the Bimester programme was to provide a forum for discussion across a broad range of topics of current research with a view to foster international academic cooperation and collaboration, whilst presenting new opportunities and stimulation for further investigation and developments. We felt this goal would genuinely reflect Baer's view on how mathematical advancement is best achieved. The vast variety of research initiatives contained in this volume is proof positive of the resounding success of the endeavour
