2002 was exactly twenty years after the publication of the seminal paper of K.C. Persaud and G. Dodds. In that paper the similitude between an array of cross-selective gas sensors and receptors of the mammalian olfaction was for the first time argued. This conjecture is still the main foundation of those chemical sensor arrays that, with the time, have got the popular name of electronic noses.In this symposium we had about 150 participants from all the continents. The 67 papers collected in this book witness the efforts. Novel sensors and measurement technology, innovative data analysis, and applications in the fields of agrofood, environment, space, automotive, medicine, and microbiology were presented here as seeds of future developments all oriented to an improvement of quality of life that is the final horizon ofartificial sensing researches. To this regard, it has to be mentioned the European Union funded network “NOSE II” that brings together scientists from academies and industries that are developer and/or users of electronic noses. The days immediately after this conference a workshop was held at the National Resarch Council headquarters in Rome were most of the hottest topics of artificial senses were illustrated and discussed.
