In these vivid and revealing essays, a group of architects and professors talk with candor about their first workshop experience in Kolkata. Each article focuses on the design groups’ ”Kolkata debut”, and tells the inside story of the architects’ experience as seen through the work of the team. Along the way, every aspect of such experience is explored – from the integration in the new urban reality, to the identification of the key issues, in terms of opportunities and problems, and to the proposal of a design intervention at a very broad and conceptual scale. These articles are not only memoirs of particular worksites, each one is also an emotional journey in which the architects relive the surprise and elation, the interest and curiosity, the difficulty and richness of making a first urban project in India.
