SINTESI
Opinions differ widely on the Italian reception of U.S. culture in the Fascist period between the wars. Jane Dunnett assesses all the evidence and offers an original and nuanced reading of the fascinated responses to America of Italian writers, politicians, journalists, film-makers, film audiences, and readers. An “American Myth” was born in this period, despite official anti-Americanism, and positive and negative views continued until after 1945. Dunnett’s study is the first in English to critically present this complex panorama and offers a rich gallery of major and representative figures, with generous quotations from sources both classic and little–known.
