SINTESI
An original translation of W.B. Yeats’s Deirdre offers an insight into the challenges and strategies inherent to the translation, from Engish to Italian, of a theatre–play written in Ireland in 1906. The annotations to the Italian text and the introductory essay, while grounded on a linguistics–based analysis that show how much translation choices are made at word level, also give account of the cultural and linguistic context of Yeats’s dramatic rendering. His Deirdre is located at the crossroads between poetic literature and the stage, so a contemporary translation of the play is addressed to readers as well as its originally inteded recipients: theatre practitioners and audiences.
