Women’s paid and unpaid work in Italy, 1988-2014

Ths volume addresses changes in employment, housework and childcare among Italian women from 1988 to 2014, investigating at which points of the social strata and the life–cycle such changes have occurred. Using four rounds of Italian Time Use data, the volume reveals peaks and troughs in the situation of Italian women. Importantly, women’s employment has increased and housework time has declined. Furthermore, over the decades Italian mothers invest significantly more time in childcare. However, large disparities still exist among women from different social strata, with different levels of education and motherhood status. These inequalities will need to be faced and solved before gender equality can be achieved in the Italian society.
