Imposed Interpretation. Querying Contemporary Literary Criticism
Imposed interpretation is one of the basic characteristics andfallacies of the contemporary western literary criticism. It happensthroughout the process when diversified theories of extra–literary originsand even scientific rules penetrate into the interpretative discourseof literature. Its symptoms include making biased judgments about atext’s value or meanings with a pre–taken stance, forcing new but absurdinterpretation upon old classical works through reversed routes ofcognition, re–locating a text by distorting its language or transplantingalien concepts. Imposed interpretation leads criticism far away from theontological existence of literature, and now its methodological imperfectionsare getting more and more apparent, like the reversion betweenpractice and theory, misplaced relationship between the concrete andthe abstract, and the split between the part and the whole. For the discursiveconstruction of contemporary literary criticism, it is necessary andessential to strive for systematical and balanced development. Criticismshould on the basis of absorbing progressive elements of the times beconscious of its multi–dimensional growth and the integration of theoriesand practice. The future of literary theories lies in their practicalityto literary creation.
