ARCHITECTURAL REHABILITATION & STORYTELLING: MEMORY AS MATTER
Rehabilitation is considered an efficient response to the environmental, economic, and urban challenges that 21st century society requires. Urban regeneration and sustainable rehabilitation can be considered challenges inherent to architecture within this context. In turn, rehabilitation is an architectural discipline with a unique narrative capacity, due to its ability to relate the functional recovery of architecture to the historical memory of a place. The narrative eloquence of architectural rehabilitation is analyzed here from the capacity of construction of micro-history that the architectural project has. It is the ability to single out architectural objects —not necessarily cataloged as such— but containers of the collective, constructive, and social memory of a context. The text analyzes two case studies from the city of Barcelona in which the rehabilitation processes have given rise to rich architectures in relation to the narrative of the memory they contain, but at the same time ambitious in terms of the expectations of functional recovery of the equipments that update. The project processes that are carried out differ in terms of the strategic proposal but coincide in the incorporation of memory as operational material for architecture. Keywords: Rehabilitation, Memory, Storytelling.
