On the theme of medieval institutions, it is possible to find a substantial divergence between Hegel’s and Schmitt’s thoughts. While the philosopher sees in medieval structures the necessary antithesis for the rise of the modern subjectivity and the State, the jurist in the last years of his life captures in the medieval order and in his spiritual strength an element of meaning to be opposed to the depoliticization of the current era.
