La Villa Olímpica de la Ciudad de México: Vivienda colectiva y arquitectura funcionalista en las Olimpiadas de 1968. The Olympic Villa of Mexico City: Collective Housing and Functi
The games of the XIX Olympiad held in 1968 in México City were the first ones in Latin America. The buildings and infrastructure built in order to house the Olympic Games became the capital city of Mexico in a showcase of the modern architecture of an entire cultural and economic region. In that sense the facilities built for the occasion showed three interesting architectural dimensions: the ability of Mexicans architects and engineers to innovate in the field of design and use of materials; the development of an international rationalist style amalgamated with the precepts of Mexican nationalist aesthetics from the first half of 20th century; and finally, the capacity to adapt the new urban complexes and buildings to the functionalist international trends. This latter was the case of the Olympic Village, one of the two urban complexes built to house the athletes, judges and journalists during their stay in the city. At the end of the Olympic Games the urban complex was sold and used for collective housing by Mexican families. The present article shows the case of this Olympic Village as an example of functionalist architecture dedicated to collective housing. The background of this type of architecture in México City and the characteristics of the project in the context of the Olympic games are described.
