Roma e le Olimpiadi del 1960 Rome and the 1960 Olympics
The XVII Olympiad was held in Rome from August 25 to September 11, 1960. For this event, a great number of sport venues were built (or rebuilt) in only 5 years. The success of this extraordinary project is attributed to the generous funding of the state, and to the decision to entrust qualified architects to carry out the projects. The valuable pieces of work, which were realized, completely changed the aspect of some of Rome’s most important zones, such as the northern area, while some of the road infrastructures also influenced the city’s future development. Most of the planning solutions that the Municipality adapted had already been proposed in the Fascist Era when the possibility of hosting the Olympic Games in the Capital was being pondered, first in 1940 and then in 1944. A link between the sport policies of the Fascist Era and that of the post-war period, was the CONI - Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano (Italian National Olympic Committee), which had a determining role, not only in the planning of the Olympic venues, but also of the choice of the areas where they were to be realized, in this way influencing– even if indirectly – the urban development policies in the most crucial years of Rome’s contemporary history when the current Urban Planning of 1931 had already been out-dated and the new one still in the drafting stage. After the second post-war period, there were no extraordinary events in Rome’s history, which could be compared to the 1960 Olympiad, which was capable of having an effect on the progress of the city’s modernization on an “urban scale”. The only event, for its range of ventures and quality of realized works, which recall the 1960 Olympiad, was the 2000 Jubilee.
