Grassroots sports architecture in Olympic years. The case of Barcelona
The Olympics - Urban Architecture duo calls to the mind of many the "case" of Barcelona, which catches the occasion of the Games of 1992 to celebrate the new face of the city. In this article, rather than retracing the well- known milestones that characterized the Modelo Barcelona, the emphasis is on a specific theme: the promotion of grassroots sport in the Olympic years. In fact, it can be seen how the assignment (1986) of the 1992 Olympic Games to the city of Barcelona, on the one hand leads to the planning of large sports facilities, home to the main events (Montjuïc Area, Diagonal Area, Vall d'Hebron Area, Parc de Mar Area), and on the other it is an accelerator (in catalan: accelerador) for the construction of basic services for sport. In particular, with the fine- tuning of datasheets set by the Generalitat de Catalunya, a dimensional-functional outline of a sports pavilion is shared with a minimum dimension standard. These type-unit scheme was thought to manage and control the construction of numbers of high-standards facilities instead of few for the practice of grassroots sport.
