La renovación del paisaje urbano del waterfront de Lisboa Como Espacio turístico–cultural: intervenciones y conflictos. Lisbon Waterfront Urban Landscape Renovation As a Tourist-Cu
In the recent years, Lisbon has been promoting itself as a modern, dynamic, competitive and cosmopolitan urban place aspiring to be an Atlantic global city. Urban marketing policies are being developed as a mean to reach new economic demands by instrumentalizing culture. As other cities pressured by mass tourism, Lisbon is following strategies that aim to shift the city`s branding by using architectural and urban projects and masterplans which affect the consumption of both the traditional city and the new spaces. These policies are particularly visible along the fluvial waterfront of the city. The representation of its urban landscape is been progressively changed by regenerating the urban places of the former industry, increasing the environmental quality, recovering the architectural and urban heritage of historic areas, renewing the public space, improving the urban mobility and connectivity as well as the creation of new leisure and cultural facilities. However, as these actions take place, the gentrification and its consequences are growing. This dynamic creates both a conflict between globalization and local memory and between the city’s branding and the real needs of its citizens.
