Souvenirs of Pompeii in the scandinavian architecture of the first decades of the twentieth century
It is notable that Italian models, often experienced through the social ritual of the tour in Italy, have aremarkable influence on the works of Scandinavian architects of the Nineteenth and Twentieth century. In that period Pompeii gains a fundamental role, not only because it is an important stop-over inItaly, but also because it stimulates a variety of reflections in art and architecture. If at first – mainly inCopenhagen during the early Nineteenth century – the focus is on the decorative motifs and their inspirationfor the architectural polychromy, the investigation field widens until the beginning of theTwentieth century. With new interpretations of its sophisticated mullions for iron structures, or withmodern adaptations of the spatial concatenation of open and enclosed spaces around a courtyard, atthat moment Pompeii becomes a true architectural inspirations. Many of the light and harmoniouselements shared by the Nordic Classicism, the Swedish Grace and the work of Asplund in the 1910scan be traced back to the influence of Pompeii on the Scandinavian imaginary.
