Located in the Triana neighborhood, then “del Encino”, the oldest in the city of Aguascalientes, the Encino garden is a product of the change in the vocation of public use of the New Spanish viceregal square as a religious, commercial and administrative articulation of the neighborhood sectors in which human settlements were divided into spaces that in the 19th century were destined to the cultivation of “healthy leisure”, implementing the provision of public gardens. From its viceregal location, the Encino Garden served as one of the nodes in the local distribution of water, of utmost importance in a semi-desert region such as Aguascalientes where, in order to support part of the operations of the important “Ruta de la Plata”and the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the maintenance of orchards for the sustenance of locals and commerce was experienced for centuries. Product of the hydraulic infrastructure that mayor Matías Ángel de la Mota Padilla made in the 18th century, the garden still has the presence of the fountain that now replaces the original fountain. From the same century, the temple dedicated to Cristo del Encino reigns over the walls that delimit the garden with its magnificent Churrigueresque baroque façade with stipe supports. The rest of the painting has estates from various moments of local architecture, but it is the arboreal mass of the garden and the temple that still serves as an urban articulation and still preserves the collective neighborhood memory of a city that exceeded just under seventy thousand inhabitants to almost one million today.
