The cruise segment was considered at the beginning of the 21st century as mass tourism due to the volume of tourists that participate in it and the high degree of spatial concentration that characterizes the activity. As a result, port tourism cities are aware of the economic opportunities that the arrival of thousands of cruise passengers provides to a tourist destination. According to this, the cities have been transformed and adapted to locate themselves in the itineraries of the shipping companies and, irremediably, in the world tourist map. Consequently, some destinations, which have little tourist relevance, found in the cruise segment the necessary impulse to put themselves on a global scale. Such is the case of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, Spain, which during the last decade has experienced an accelerated growth in the arrival of tourists because of, in part, the reposition of the capital as a cruise destination. However, this article, through the case study of the capital, highlights the other side of the tourism industry, in which the ships are engines of economic growth, but which, however, also represent a danger to the sustainability of destinations. The proposed methodology has been based on a qualitative analysis through normative analysis, focus group and field work.
