More tourism? Mass tourism? Mars tourism?

“More Tourism? Mass Tourism? Mars Tourism?” is a statement composed in several stages on a Lisbon wall. As a manifest of the ‘dialogue’ on urban walls, “More Tourism? ...” becomes the title of an artistic intervention during the International (Un)Conference “Urban Struggles in Mediterranean Cities: The Right to the City and the Common Space” (Athens, 31 May - 3 June 2018).Fifteen images - photographs of writings and dialogues on the walls of Lisbon in response to the tourism phenomena - were exhibited with the aim to address issues of who writes, who reads and who, perhaps, should read the sentences reported on the urban façades. Transforming urban walls into a common space for dialogue, society communicates in silence and, importantly, anonymity; urban walls express “The Right to the City”.This article starts from those photographs and aim to explore the effects of tourism phenomena in Lisbon and the processes that fomented it. The number of foreign people spending in Lisbon long or short periods of time (new residents or tourists) - well accepted or rejected, as shown in the photographs of writings - increases. Are city dwellers adapting to the growing of Lisbon’s density of population? An affirmative answer does not exempt public administration from a necessary attention on policies of housing.
