                Dr. Šilhavý is a member of the scientific staff of the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciencesof the Czech Republic in Prague.
His main areas of interest are continuum mechanics of solids, calculus of variations and engineering problems of masonry structures. He graduated at the Charles University and received his Ph.D. from the Academy of Sciences of Czechoslovakia.
He published over 100 scientific papers and a monograph “The Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Continuous Media” (Springer, 1997). He lectured at many universities and institutes in North and South America, England, and Europe, and spent many extended scientific stays abroad.>br> He is a member of editorial boards of several journals. He presented a number of invited talks at various conferences.
