Piero Angeli reports here the birth of the School of Receptor Chemistry at the University of Camerino at the start of the 1970s, giving a description of the main researchers involved and of the state of medicinal chemistry in Italy and internationally during that period. Moreover, the Camerino Receptor Symposium series is recounted by Angeli tracing the course from the first Symposium in 1978, to the 2010 one, describing the agreement for cooperation born among the organizers of the Camerino, Noordwijkerhout (Dutch) and Cyprus Symposium, and surveying the development of receptorology. Complete biographical notes about all the protagonists of the Camerino School are finally reported.
