							Richard Gray (1929-2005) was one of the pioneers of African History and one of the first European academics to establish the discipline and working on a scientific basis. Professor of African History at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, member of the Pontifical Committee of Historical Sciences, editor of the first published volume out of eight of The Cambridge History of Africa c.1600-c.1790, Vol. 4, printed in 1975, author of many books and essays on Papacy, Missions and Christianity in Africa. Among his works: The Two Nations: Aspects of the Development of Race Relations in the Rhodesias and Nyasaland, London 1960, A History of the Southern Sudan 1839-1889, Oxford 1961 and Black Christians and White Missionaries, New Haven and London 1990, that remains his best known and appreciated book on African religious modern history. This volume is a tribute to the author and his personality.
