Route Don Vasco de Quiroga in Michoacán (Mexico): heritage commodification and challenges for sustainable cultural tourism development

The Route Don Vasco de Quiroga (RDVQ) was presented in 2011 as an important cultural tourism product in Michoacán and Mexico. Currently, it shows scenarios of tourist and territorial management which tend to commodify and trivialize the cultural heritage, diverging it from the objectives and operating model with which it was planned from the beginning. Its development is still emerging and, due to different circumstances, cannot entirely operate nor consolidate its position as a complementary option to the already well established tourist destinations in Michoacán to encourage cultural tourism as the strategic factor for both, the economic and social progress, from a local development approach, in a heritage territory with strong indigenous roots and with exceptional cultural resources.
