The resistance of architecture or the economy of the architectural project

The topicality of architectural conception in Europe is increasingly moving toward the abandonmentof any sort of formal or volumetric excess that characterized the generation of the 2000s toincreasingly focus on formal simplicity or the development of border practices. This resistance to complexity and multidisciplinarity through the substitution of the simplicity andintegrity of the architect’s profession is the occasion for us to ponder the role of contemporaryarchitecture to face the challenges that today’s society raises (immigration, political changes, economicand environmental crises, etc.). Conception’s role is often challenged because it is considered in thebest of cases an aesthetic complement to a built work, and in the worst, at variance with the principalconcerns of a commission or a society. In a context in which the economic question has become thecenter of the architectural debate (drastic reductions in public subsidies, replacement of the publiccommission by the increase in real-estate development, radical modifications in competition rules, etc.), this article endeavors to sum up how to resist the current architectural trends by considering theeconomy of the project as an innovative tool of architectural conception.
