Collocations are combinations of words that speakers of a language use frequently and perceive as natural. Finding appropriate methods to identify such combinations in corpora is of crucial importance in fields as diverse as lexicography and language acquisition, but is far from a trivial task. This book addresses the issue by evaluating different statistical measures for the automatic extraction of lexical collocations from a specialised corpus of English. Triangulating lexicographic, informant and psycholinguistic evidence, its aim is to contribute to our understanding of the many facets of collocation, one of the best– loved, and yet most elusive notions in corpus linguistics.
