Since 2003, after having reached quantitatively incomparable levels in new building, China’s urban and territorial development policies have been marked by new directives based on energy saving and “sustainable” resources that solicit the launch of new programmes for the protection, requalification and recovery of the existing and environmental building heritage. From this perspective Italy positions itself as a Country of reference par excellence and, specifically, with regards to themes of conservation, recovery and the re–use of the existing heritage, Tuscany represents an extremely interesting reality for Chinese operators. The event “Cultural Heritage Preservation, Rehabilitation and Reuse. The Tuscan Tradition” is set within this very context, jointly promoted and organized by the Department of Architectural Technology and Design “Pierluigi Spadolini” of the University of Florence and the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Tongji University, Shanghai. The event is centred on the experiences of the Tuscan cultural heritage valorization techniques and traditions. The exhibition–conference subject–matters represent the institutional intervention policies (of Regional, Provincial and Municipal public administrations) and the important interventions implemented, highlighting experiences gained in the field of recovery of the existent, historic and otherwise. The exhibition–conference has been included among the annual preparatory events for the Shanghai 2010 world expo and is a special event among exhibitions concerning Italy in China 2006 (Professors Corrado Latina and Maria Chiara Torricelli).
