The book, which focuses on the Historic Peninsula and proposes that urban spaces be experienced through the eyes of a “flaneur”, seems even more meaningful today than when it was first published in 2006… Inevitably, transformations occur because of city dynamics. The primary subject of this book — promenades — is meaningful in the sense that while it narrates the story of the layering of the city of İstanbul over time, it also seeks to provide the reader with a perceptual experience that is rooted in the context of history and particular urban spaces. Perhaps even more importantly, the book traces the contours of how people, nature and urban spaces are interconnected. Through İstanbul: An Urban Commentary, the aim has been to document and remind readers of those connections, and in the process make it possible for them to feel and experience the city of İstanbul and its urban spaces as a whole.
