Mercados Turistificados y Mercados gentrificados en ciudades patrimoniales del centro de México
In several main tourist cities around the world, public markets now offer products for tourists or new residents from upper middle classes. This chapter analyses markets in two World Heritage Mexican cities with important touristification and gentrification processes: San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato. The methodology implies qualitative analysis of products and commerce inside the markets, and land use in the immediate context around it. The urban and spatial changes are evaluated in terms of tourism specialization and targeted socio-economic category. It was found that social and spatial transformations of the city impact the market and its surroundings. It is concluded that the traditional market appears as an indicator of the progressive gentrification and touristification of the heritage city.
