Tripoli, the capital of the North Governorate, is the second-largest city in Lebanon. Itoverlooks the eastern Mediterranean Sea but unfortunately, it is the poorest city between all the towns overlooking this body of water. Having more than 34 centuries of history, Tripoli is home to many historical and UNESCO sites and continues to be the second-largest city having Mameluke architectural heritage after Cairo. The historical markets or souks of this Islamic city are still in continuous activity since the 13th century. In this essay, the words souk, khan and Islamic cities will be delineated. A brief historical review of the city of Tripoli and the main characteristics of some souks and khans are described as well. The survival of such souks until now with all their historical features and their unceasing activities in an environment of deterioration and incessant conflicts and wars is a curious case worthy to shed light on. A study of the features of the bustling Tripolitan souks and khans, the reasons behind their long existence and their partial decay are detailed. In order to give them back, their old glory fadingby the absence of maintenance, accumulation of deteriorations and competition with another market, a list of possible cultural and technical actions and policies to be taken by authorities and residents will be presented.
